My body drifted upward through the chains, through the grate, through the floor itself. I floated in the gray nothing beneath the world, watching Granny stomp in confusion above.

The world turned to honey.
I walked past every guard before they could blink, lifted the key from the Admiral’s pocket, and freed the little Empress before the first raindrop hit the ground.
I did.
My pistol materialized, full.
“Lucky,” she spat.
I closed the console.
I surfaced behind her, silent as a shadow. She spun. “You don’t know the dangerous ones, boy!”
“Welcome to the console,” she whispered, appearing beside me though she hadn’t moved. A glowing text field floated before my eyes.
“You think the Outsider gave you gifts ?” she cackled, jabbing a bony finger at my Mark. “No, dearie. He just opened a door. The real power... is in the tilde .”
Then I was alone in the gray void.
The Outsider appeared on a whale’s skeleton behind me, slow-clapping in hyper-slow motion.
“Cheater,” he said, with something like admiration.
She snapped her fingers. The world froze. The guards mid-lunge. The rats mid-scamper. Even the rain hung in the air like scattered diamonds.
