    Or she could join the chorus. Let the prion take her. Become something new. Something that didn’t feel guilt or grief or the crushing weight of every single choice she’d ever made.

    “Why should I help you?”

    The infected found the bunker. No one knew how—maybe a survivor talked, maybe they remembered . Eliza stood behind blast glass as the outer defense teams were overrun. The infected didn’t bite. They didn’t need to. They just overwhelmed, held down, and waited for the airborne prion to do its work. “We don’t have a choice

    Eliza nodded.

    She found a small group of survivors in a library basement. Fifteen people. Dirty, scared, running out of food. Their leader was a twelve-year-old girl with a pistol and a cough that sounded like the early stages. They’d die anyway, probably

    She wasn’t their mother. She was their maker. And makers, she decided, had a responsibility.

    Eliza worked. Not because she wanted to atone. Because the math was still running in her head. The prion’s replication kinetics. The protein folding pathway. The weakness she’d known about since version 0.9 but had ignored because version 1.0 was faster, cleaner, more likely to get published.

    She didn’t feel guilty. Not yet. That came later.
