Book 1 is for beginners. The answer key frequently answers in full Chinese characters , even when the student has only learned pinyin up to that chapter. You will find yourself staring at a character you haven't learned yet, thinking "Is that the answer?" A mixed pinyin/character key would have been better.
Use it strictly to check your work, not to "learn" from. To truly benefit, you must find the accompanying audio scripts (the Yuliao or Wenzi Cailiao ) online or from your teacher. Unlike some crowd-sourced answer keys online, the official Da An is error-free (in our experience). If the recording says the man went to the bank at 10:30, the key says "10:30," not "10:13." Use it strictly to check your work, not to "learn" from
The answer key often gives answers like: "1. 他昨天去了图书馆 (He went to the library yesterday)." But if you misheard "supermarket," the key won't show the original sentence from the audio for comparison. You need the transcript (the listening script ), which is a separate, rare document. The answer key alone is half a solution.
The listening course often uses minimal pairs (e.g., mai vs. mai ; shuijiao vs. shujiao ). The answer key tells you definitively which character/word the audio intended, which is invaluable for training your ear. The Cons (Why it frustrates) 1. No explanations. Zero. Zilch. This is the biggest flaw. You get answer "B" or "False" or "火车". It never tells you why B is correct or what specific phrase in the audio proved "False." If you guessed correctly by luck, you will never know. If you got it wrong, you cannot diagnose why (Was it a tone? A new word? Connected speech?).
