The first two Sonic games were about holding right and hoping you didn't hit a spike pit. Sonic 3 introduced the Insta-Shield . Tapping the jump button in mid-air gave Sonic a brief flash of invincibility. It was a tiny change that raised the skill ceiling dramatically.
