Darwin is the open source operating system from Apple that forms the base for macOS. PureDarwin is a community project that fills in the gaps to make Darwin usable.
The PureDarwin project, which aims to make Apple's open-source Darwin OS more usable, is still actively maintained as of 2024. While development has been relatively slow, the project continues to progress through community contributions. PureDarwin focuses on creating a usable bootable system that is independent of macOS components, relying solely on Darwin and other open-source tools.
The project's main focus is providing useful documentation and making it easier for developers and open-source enthusiasts to engage with Darwin.
The PD-17.4 Test Build is a minimal system, unlike previous versions like PureDarwin Xmas with a graphical
interface. It’s distributed as a virtual machine disk (VMDK) and runs via software like QEMU.
Due to the lack of proprietary macOS components, the community must develop alternatives, leaving
elements like
network drivers and hardware support incomplete. This build is intended for developers and open-source
enthusiasts to explore Darwin development outside of macOS.
Based on Darwin 17, which corresponds to macOS High Sierra (10.13.x).
Here’s a sample journal entry written in the style of a “We Bare Bears” episode recap or a fan journal. You can imagine this as a page from a bear cub’s notebook or a fan’s daily log. Bear Stack Log: Day 347
Ran into Nom Nom. He was shooting a commercial for “Paws-itive Energy Drinks.” He called us “walking carpets” again. Grizz asked for a selfie. Nom Nom threw a tiny tantrum. Ice Bear flexed once. Nom Nom ran away. So… same as always. we bare bears journal

Charlie dropped by unannounced (through the wall). He brought “mystery mushrooms” from the woods. Panda screamed. Grizz ate one anyway. Charlie then asked if we wanted to watch him “shadow box a tree.” We politely declined. He was shooting a commercial for “Paws-itive Energy Drinks
Woke up late. Grizzly was already trying to order 30 breakfast burritos on his phone. Panda was still in “do not disturb” mode because his anime pillow fell off the bed. Ice Bear made coffee with one hand and sharpened his chef knife with the other. Normal stuff.
We tried to go to the park for a picnic. But a rogue squirrel (probably Chloe’s study buddy) stole our sandwich. Grizz chased it for 3 blocks. Panda tripped over a skateboard and blamed his phone signal. Ice Bear just stared at the squirrel until it gave the sandwich back. Ice Bear wins again.
Ended the day with a triple bear stack on the couch. Watched a documentary about salmon. Cried a little (Grizz). Scrolled through #aesthetic pics of clouds (Panda). Ice Bear fell asleep standing up again.
